Did you know that everyone is a motivational speaker? A mother may be asking a child to clean up their room or a finance manager giving a pitch to improve the company finances. You may be asking someone, or a team, at work to take action. We are all motivational speakers in everyday life as we continually ask someone else to do something. These are all motivational speeches.

What is a motivational speech?
The purpose of a motivational speech is to achieve action by motivating or inspiring other people. A motivational speech takes a persuasive speech to the next step to create action. Motivational speakers may attempt to challenge or transform their audiences.

You need to have personal conviction to the cause and have completed a thorough research. You need to emphasise the merits or benefits of such action and be ready for questions. Personal experience is important.

You need to establish the reason people should act. Is it for self-protection, improved self-esteem, financial benefit, addressing community concerns or addressing concerns for others?

You need to state the type of action needed.

Tips to make your speech compelling and memorable
• Be enthusiastic about what you are saying. Enthusiasm is contagious.
• Speak with confidence and conviction.

• Use compelling and memorable quotes, stories and anecdotes to provide concrete examples to which your audience can relate. The settings, the dialogue, the emotions and the vivid details will show your audience why action needs to be taken. Perhaps use your own example to illustrate overcoming adversity or dealing with necessity and link this into your topic.
• Say ‘you’ and ‘we’, not ‘I’ and ‘me’ so you are not telling people what you want them to do. You are assisting them to think they can take the required action. This is important if you are motivating a team as it encourages working together.
• Keep it simple. People are not motivated by what you say. They are motivated by what they understand. To ensure audience understanding, break down complex ideas into simple components if this is required. Make your speech memorable, well-structured and logical.
